Our story

We learned about water the hard way. In Mississippi.

Rinze started with a boil-water notice, a lot of bottled water, and one question nobody could answer.

01

The summer the water stopped.

In late August 2022, the Pearl River flooded and Jackson's largest water treatment plant stopped working. About 150,000 people were left without safe water. The city had already been under a boil-water notice for a month. It wasn't lifted until September 15, and it was the end of October before the EPA called the water safe to drink again.

We live in Mississippi, and we went through it with everyone else: the cases of bottled water, the boiled pots, the texts checking whether the notice was still on.

You learn a lot about water when you can't trust it. Mostly, you learn how little you ever thought about it before.

02

The question nobody could answer.

Once the water came back, we did what most people do. We got a fridge filter. A pitcher. We started reading the city's water reports.

And then it hit us. Everything we'd done was about the water we drink. The water the whole family stands under every day, hot, head to toe, for ten minutes at a time, came straight from the pipe. Nobody talked about that one.

03

So we looked at shower filters.

What we found:

  • The big brands charged $140 to $169, then signed you up for refills automatically. Their one-star reviews were mostly about getting billed.
  • The cheap ones looked like they'd fall apart, and nobody explained what was inside them.
  • Almost nobody talked straight about what a shower filter actually does.
04

So we built the boring, honest version.

Rinze is a filtered showerhead with an 8-layer cartridge: KDF-55 and coconut activated carbon to reduce free chlorine, plus a steel mesh and cotton layer to catch sediment and rust from old pipes. It installs by hand in about two minutes.

It costs $85. Refills start at $25, and you order them when you want them.
